In case of implant fracture, who is responsible?

Laurent Sedel

Fracture of ceramic implant is frequently a reason for legal action. The author tries to explain that the choice of a ceramic material is part of a strategic plan that try to limit debris generation, thus limiting the risk of short term implant revision. Ceramic fracture is rare but could occur. As the implant can remain for many years, this accident might not be considered too quickly as a mistake. Some directory might be established: short term fracture of a ceramic implant could be the consequence of surgeon insufficiency, manufacturing problem, regarding material or design;

Long term implant fracture, after 10 years could just be considered as therapeutic alea, and not linked to some faulty reason.
